Panel of 11 to defend Govt policy decisions

Panel of 11 to defend Govt policy decisions
Facing flak from all quarters on the issues related to FDI in retail sector, black money and inflation, the Government on Thursday made a bid for an image building exercise by appointing a panel of 11 young Ministers as spokespersons to defend its policy decisions.

The panel consists of young Ministers — Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot, Jitin Prasada, Milind Deora, RPN Singh, MM Pallam Raju, Rajiv Shukla, Krishna Tirath, D Purandeshwari, Ajay Maken and Ashwani Kumar.

They have entrusted with the task of refurbishing the image of the UPA Government which has been damaged badly due to the recent controversies be it on the Lokpal muddle or the ongoing Telangana agitation.

These Ministers of State will work in addition to the four regular spokespersons of the Congress, and the Group of Ministers on Media, which comprises of senior Ministers who explain the Government’s decisions on various issues and policy matters.

The appointment of these Ministers indicate that the Government is not very happy with the way its image is being projected in the media and feels that these young and energetic Ministers will be able to articulate its position on various contentious issues more effectively.

Significantly, it is the GoM on Media, which was constituted after the UPA Government came under attack for mishandling the Anna Hazare agitation, that has the recommended appointment of these Ministers as spokespersons.

The argument in support of the decision is that since the media has grown tremendously, it has become very difficult for a handful of Ministers to explain or defend the Government on all the issues effectively. Hence, these young Ministers have been tasked to articulate the Government position in all forums of media.

But then, how Minister of State for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath, who has difficulty in conveying the decisions of her own Ministry, would perform remains to be seen. Similarly, Purandeshwari, who is generally perceived as not very vocal, will also have to interact with mediapersons regularly to explain the Government position.
