‘Do more to establish ‘true’ democracy in Myanmar’
With Myanmar’s pro-democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi asking India to do more to establish “true” democracy in her country, for the first time a large Parliamentary delegation from Myanmar is set to visit India mid December.
The 30-member strong parliamentary delegation, lead by the speaker of the lower house Shwe Mann, will be in India from 11 to 15 November, sources told The Pioneer.
The delegation will view the way Indian parliament carries its functions and observed the proceedings of the winter session. The delegation is visiting Indian on the invitation of Speaker Meira Kumar, sources said.
Mann, Myanmar’s ex Junta chief, was elected in March this year as the Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw (People’s Parliament), the Lower House of the Burmese Parliament.
He was also the third-highest ranking member in Burmese Armed Forces and had worked in capacity as the coordinator for military operations. He was also the head of the State Peace and Development Council, after Than Shwe and Maung Aye.
Myanmar is taking cautious steps for a transition to democracy and New Delhi is keen to help it achieve “broad-based and inclusive,” transition, sources said,
During US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton historic trip to Myanmar, Suu Kyi told Clinton, “I think India, as a democracy... Certainly we would like India to do more to promote democratic values in Myanmar.”
