Taiwan exploring cultural ties, investment opportunities

The visit of Taiwan’s Ambassador Wen-chyi Ong to Ranchi may prove fruitful for investment in days to come but exploration of cultural ties between the two is also on cards. Following a meeting with the Federation of Jharkhand Chambers of Commerce and Industries and officials of the State industry department, the Ambassador has focussed his attention to finding commonalities with the tribal State that can be showcased before his native mandarins.

“My visit to Ranchi and attending of the memorial function of ROC Military cemetery in Ramgarh would place the State on the map of Taiwan. Millions of Taiwanese would develop an interest in the State in days to come. Many tourists would look for Buddhist sites in Jharkhand as well instead of making a beeline for just Bodhgaya and Rajgir,” Wen-chyi said on Thursday evening.

Wen-chyi paid a visit to FJCCI earlier in the day where several investment prospects were discussed. “A large delegation met us and I thought that AP Singh (Industry Secretary) would have invited officials from his department. I was very happy to hear that these people are from medium and small industries. I think providing technology and other know-how, especially for the food processing industry, can be a good option for us,” he said.

The delegation nevertheless called for proactive measures in propagating the idea of Jharkhand including its richness in terms of mineral resources and natural beauty at the international level. “It has been a problem here. The people of Taiwan know that Assam is in Sri Lanka and not in India. They are passionate about the tea grown in Assam but most of the import to Taiwan is from Sri Lanka. India should showcase its potential at international level and tap the market available,” said the Ambassador during an informal chat.
