Black money: BJP MPs submit declaration
BJP MPs on Friday submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari a declaration claiming they do not possess illegal bank accounts or assets outside India.
Out of 115 MPs that the BJP has in the Lok Sabha, 112 made the declaration. Of the remaining three, DV Sadananda Gowda is now Karnataka Chief Minister while J Shantha and S Pakiruppa (both MPs from Karnataka) were suspended from the BJP last month. Similarly, 50 out of 51 Rajya Sabha MPs gave the declaration. Ram Jethmalani could not turn up as his daughter Rani Jethmalani is critically ill in Mumbai.
The move coincided with the Anti-Corruption Day and comes ahead of BJP veteran LK Advani’s adjournment motion debate on black money, which is likely to be taken up in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
“Many nations like America, Germany and France have forced the nations considered as tax havens to hand over their illegal funds to them. When there is a debate on black money in Parliament, we will ask what India has achieved in this regard,” Advani told reporters outside Parliament.
Advani had first raked up the issue during 2009 Parliamentary elections and it shot to prominence after reports that the actual amount of black money kept in illicit banks accounts abroad could be many times more than what has been anticipated.
When asked when the other NDA allies would file their declarations, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said they will do so soon. She said they were yet to be handed over the proforma for the declaration.
