Ban on ‘entertainment’ after Hashmi show at Parliament

Ban on ‘entertainment’ after Hashmi show at Parliament
Entertainment, entertainment and entertainment” may have been the buzzword for the recently-released Vidya Balan-starrer The Dirty Picture, but using Parliament for promotion of the movie by one of its male leads Emraan Hashmi has raised the hackles of MPs.

BSP MP Dhananjay Singh has objected to the use of Parliament for “showbiz and entertainment” and shot off a letter to Speaker Meira Kumar. The result: Now, visitors have been banned from talking to mediapersons inside the Parliament.

Hashmi had visited Parliament on November 23 to promote the film which was released on December 2. His visit had created a commotion outside the Parliament building where mediapersons and even some MPs rushed to get a glimpse of the “serial kisser”.

Writing on the basis of what he saw, Singh said Hashmi, who came out from Parliament Building, was flocked there by the mediapersons. “This created a scene of ruckus and chaos outside the Gate No. 1 at the time when many MPs were standing there or leaving, which caused inconvenience to them,” he said.

“Well, it is an unusual way to promote the movie but we have exhausted all other ways here. So, we thought we will come and lighten up the mood,” the MP wrote, quoting Hashmi as telling the media when he was asked about the tactic for promotion of movie.

Singh raised objection to Hashmi’s act and wrote, “Parliament is the ‘Temple of Democracy’ and many important and serious issues and matters are discussed here. The nation looks upto it and it has the utmost respect of all. It is not a place for showbiz and entertainment and should not be allowed to become one.”

Expressing his displeasure and registering “strongest protest”, he requested the Speaker to take strict action in this regard and issue guidelines so that such action was not repeated again.
