Ripple effect: Omar orders audit of fire services
The fire tragedy in a Kolkata hospital had a ripple effect in Jammu and Kashmir too. Deeply disturbed with the human loss of life Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday ordered comprehensive audit of all Government and Associated Hospitals and Private Nursing Homes in the State vis-à-vis general preparedness to fire incidents and other emergencies.

A total number of 73 patients and the members of the hospital staff lost their lives in the fire tragedy.

Omar shared his grief on the micro blogging site and give vent to his ire by writing, “every time I see incidents like AMRI I’m convinced we really are a third world nation with delusions of greatness”.

Angry Omar also pointed to the poor response of the hospital staff in times of emergency. “Of course the doctors and staff fled, what else would explain the ratio of staff and patient casualties — 70:3 in AMRI, Omar stated in his tweet.

Meanwhile, to ensure strict follow up of Omar’s instructions, the Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani, directed the Fire and Emergency Services to complete the exercise and submit a detailed report by December 20.

The Minister asked the administration of all Government and associated hospitals and nursing homes to equip their health institutions with the required firefighting equipment to avoid any untoward incident that results in loss of life and property.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has been asked to monitor its preparedness to face any such eventuality and coordinate with disaster management authorities, he added.
