Custodial death case: Court rejects Sanjiv Bhatt’s plea
A Fast Track Court in Jamkhambaliya in Jamnagar district on Friday rejected suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s plea to defer the framing of charges against him in a custodial death case dating back to 1990.
Young IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, then newly appointed Deputy SP, had arrested one Prabhudas Vaishnavi when communal riots had started in Jamjodhpur of Jamnagar district during the Bharat Bandh called by the BJP following stoppage of LK Advani’s Rath Yatra at Bihar border in October 1990.
Vaishvani later died in a hospital but his brother has alleged that the cause of the death was torture in police custody.
Following Bhatt’s petitions to quash the case having been rejected by the high court and also the Supreme Court, he had filed a plea in the Fast Track Court in Jamkhambaliya to defer the framing of charges in the matter.
The Fast Track Court, however, rejected Bhatt’s plea on Friday. Public Prosecutor Bimal Chotai said that the charges would be framed against Bhatt on December 27 when the next proceedings would be taken up in the court.
