Protest demos mark Human Rights Day
Protest demonstrations and seminars marked the International Human Rights Day on Saturday with separatist leaders and an independent legislator urging the Government to revoke the controversial laws, which limit the freedom of commoners.
The Kashmir High Court Bar Association, the largest group of jurists in Kashmir, expressed grave concern over alleged human rights violations in Kashmir. President of the association Mian Abdul Qayoom accused Government of India of employing “methods of repression to suppress the people from their freedom struggle”. Chairman of the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the world was applying double standards with Kashmiris. “There should not be any discrimination under colour, creed or religion at international level on human rights”, he said.
He termed the European nations and United States as the biggest human rights violators. “They blame Muslim countries for the human rights violations in the world. European countries and United States are the signatories of the Geneva and United Nations Declaration for Human Rights, but still they are involved in gross human rights violation,” he added.
