Siberian avians cop a rest at Bundu PS

Sensing danger at the age-old habitats around water bodies in and around Ranchi, migrating Siberian birds have finally taken shelter at the Bundu police station, hardly 45 km from here.

The staff at the police station has been instructed not to disturb these birds. “These birds have come here and will give birth to their young before flying away. They are feeding on the paddy fields and the fish from the nearby ponds. We are taking proper care of them. We have instructed all our staff at the police station not to harm them,” the Bundu DSP said.

According to experts, due to the fear of disturbance by local people at their natural habitats - which is usually around water bodies - they shift to some other location which appears safer. “These birds are prone to being disturbed by the people. Sometimes they change their location due to shortage of food. They might shift to some remote area in search of adequate supply of food from in the nearby fields,” said KK Verma, a well known environmentalist and professor of zoology.

Siberian birds are considered to be one of the most endangered species in the world as their number is going down gradually.
