Doon body to plan R&R for mining-hit Karnataka districts
Karnataka has requested the Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education (ICFRE), Dehradun, to prepare a reclamation andrehabilitation plan for areas affected by mining activities in Bellary, Chitradurga and Tumkur districts.
The request comes following a direction to the State by the Supreme Court to submit such a plan. ICFRE has expertise in environmental impact assessment studies.
According to council director general VK Bahuguna, preparation of the reclamation and rehabilitation plans will cost about Rs 14 crore and take two years to complete. “This will also open new vistas for the use of science and research in checking environmental degradation and for suggesting effective rehabilitation measures,” added Bahuguna.
