The identity cards of villagers are being misused for getting SIM card by the Maoists and local criminals in some of the rural areas in Ranchi. There are reports that some agents have been collecting ID cards from the villagers for getting BPL ration cards made for them. On the basis of these ID cards, fake SIM cards are being acquired by the Maoists and goons in connivance with those agents.

The police had also admitted that they have information about this practice and they are working on it. "This has come to the light earlier also," said Saket Kumar Singh, Senior SP, Ranchi.

The police had also recovered huge amount of voter ID cards and photographs from Dilu Minz of Intasimri village under Bero Police Station in Ranchi. Minz had been extorting money from the area in the name of David, who is lodged in the jail.

When asked about the poor villagers being trapped by the police in on the basis of these ID cards, the SSP said that the suspected people are being caught after proper verification only. "Only after verifying all the aspects of the suspect, we book them as Maoists," said the SSP.

The SIM cards in the name of villagers have been issued without the knowledge of the card holders. "Dilu had collected the photographs and ID cards of the villagers for providing them BPL ration cards but got SIM cards issued against those ID card," said DSP Bero, Charu Lakra,.

Dilu, who runs a Pan shop, then started extorting money in the name of David, his brother in law, who is also a local criminal lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail. During the investigation, it has been revealed that they have been running a nexus of criminals and agents who provide SIM cards for being misused by them so that they could be traced by the police.
