Security & defence ties too on agenda
Asia’s second and third largest economy Japan and India on Wednesday decided to enhance the security and defence cooperation apart from bolstering collaboration in the civil nuclear area and economy.

Japanese PM Yoshihiko Noda held extensive talks with his with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on a range of bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interests.

The two sides reviewed the ongoing discussions on furthering civil nuclear cooperation and reaffirmed the importance of the cooperation. India and Japan have already held three rounds of civil nuclear negotiations, but the talks stalled after the March 11 Fukushima radiation disaster.

“The two Prime Ministers welcomed the progress made to date in negotiations between India and Japan on an Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, and directed their negotiators to exert further efforts towards a conclusion of the Agreement, having due regard to each side’s relevant interests, including nuclear safety,” said the statement of Vision for the Enhancement of India-Japan Strategic and Global Partnership.

Tokyo stated that it would provide information with transparency regarding the status of the ongoing investigation on the causes of the nuclear accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, as well as its efforts to enhance nuclear safety. Noda also underlined that New Delhi should appreciate Japan’s sentiments on disarmament and hoped that India will maintain its moratorium on nuclear testing.

Noda’s visit to New Delhi comes in the backdrop of death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. Noda shared his views on North Korea’s power transition and underlined that Smooth transition in North Korea is critical for Japan’s security.

The two sides also agreed to strengthen “coordination and cooperation within the East Asia Summit process” and in creating conditions for a prosperous, open and inclusive architecture for regional cooperation.

Noda’s visit to India stressed economic investment and the two sides decided to enhance the earlier bilateral currency swap arrangement from 3 to 15 billion US dollars.

“The two PMs expressed hope that this enhancement will further strengthen financial cooperation, contribute to ensuring market stability and further develop growing economic and trade ties between the two countries,” the statement said.
