DP Yadav to join SP tomorrow
Politics makes strange bedfellows. Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav’s one time bete noire DP Yadav is all set to join him on January 2.
Meanwhile, giving another shot in the arm to the Samajwadi Party, former Speaker of Uttar Pradesh Assembly Dhani Ram Verma, along with his son Mahesh, joined the party on Saturday. Mahesh is a Bahujan Samaj Party MLA.
Dhani Ram Verma is a senior Lodh leader and six-time MLA. He was earlier with Mulayam Singh Yadav but switched loyalties after his son, Mahesh Verma, was fielded in the 2009 Lok Sabha election against SP’s scion Kannauj. The dramatic turn of events was witnessed in Rampur on Friday. SP’s leader Azam Khan had organised a workers’ sammelan in Rampur where DP Yadav suddenly arrived and joined the proceedings.
In his brief speech, DP Yadav showered praise on Mulayam Singh Yadav. He said his differences with Mulayam Singh Yadav were over and he would soon formally join the party. DP Yadav also thanked Azam Khan for clearing the air between him and the SP supremo.
Dharam Pal Yadav, popularly known as DP Yadav, has several criminal cases pending against him. He was earlier with Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1989 and was even Panchayati Raj Minister before both parted ways. DP Yadav joined Bharatiya Janata Party and was made Rajya Sabha member. However, he was later disowned by the BJP. In 2007, DP Yadav contested the Assembly elections as candidate of his own outfit, Rashtriya Parivartan Dal.
While he won the Sahaswan seat, his wife Umlesh Yadav won the Bisauli Assembly seat in Badaun. Later DP Yadav merged his outfit with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party.
He then contested the 2009 Lok Sabha election from Badaun against Mulayam Singh Yadav’s nephew Dharmendra Yadav but lost by over 30,000 votes.
Incidentally, Umlesh Yadav’s candidature has been disqualified on charges of giving paid news. DP Yadav’s son Vikas Yadav is in jail in connection with Nitish Katara murder case.
In another development, former MLA Sarwar Ali Khan of Barabanki and his son Sufiyan Akhter also joined SP on Saturday. Khan was elected to Assembly in 2002 on SP ticket but he later joined the Congress. Another former leader of BSP and chairman of UP Minorities Commission, Tahir Ashrafi, also joined the SP on Saturday.
