Alarmed over drugs being smuggled into Tihar jails, Delhi Prisons administration has sought the help of sniffer dogs to check bags, articles and even the jail vans that are used to ferry supplies for the prisoners.

The decision to deploy canines was taken after a high security gadget failed to detect contrabands. Delhi Prisons authorities have sent a proposal in this regard to the Delhi Government and have sought 10 highly trained dogs to be deployed in all the 10 jails of Tihar. Apart from sniffing out narcotic substances, these dogs will also be used to detect explosives.

Director General of Tihar Prisons Neeraj Kumar said sniffer dogs have been deployed in Puzhal jail in Chennai for detecting drugs and other banned items that inmates often manage to smuggle inside. "I visited Puzhal jail to see for myself. Four trained canines and deployment of dogs for checking baggage has made significant contributions. There are four dogs in Puzhal jail. The proposal to have dogs to keep a check on the goods being brought inside various jails has been taken after deliberations".

Delhi Prisons administration had instituted a magisterial enquiry into the death of inmate that took places some months. The officer who conducted the probe had also recommended that dogs be used to check the belongings of inmates and the supply that is brought to the various jails. The need to deploy sinffer dogs was taken after the internal vigilance discovered contrabands inside the prisons, the DG said. There are electronic gadgets installed at all the gates, but they still managed to smuggle the same, he added.

Asia's largest jail is faced with inmates trying all tricks to smuggle drugs and other substances inside jail premises. There have been numerous instances of this kind. They smuggle everything starting from opium, smack, charas, hashish, cocaine and marijuana, an official posted with Tihar jail said. The dogs procured from ITBP will be deployed at all the gates of all the 10 jails and no baggage will be allowed inside without being cleared by these canines. Tihar dog squad will be stationed in the jail premises. Dog handlers are being appointed to manage these dogs, a jail official added.

Dog trainers from Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) have been requisitioned to train high pedigree dogs for this purpose. National Dog Training Centre (NDTC) at Bhanu in Panchkula district of Haryana. ITBP spokesman Deepak Pandey said that NDTC is a unique dog training institute of its kind in the country manned by highly skilled trainers. ITBP trained 50 dogs of various breeds for Delhi Police during Delhi Commonwealth Games. Labradors and Stately Alsatians of the ITBP being trained at NDTC will prove effective in tracking contrabands and any other banned articles. Dogs possess extraordinary sense of smell and they are trained to sniff out all kind of drugs. These dogs can even detect drugs that are concealed even in human cavities, Pandey added.
