Fog envelops city, 25 flights cancelled
Delhi woke up to the foggiest day of this season on Friday. Areas close to the Yamuna, Delhi airport and parts of outer Delhi witnessed a dense fog and zero visibility. The airport operations at the Delhi airport came to a standstill for almost five hours in the morning. The minimum temperature was recorded at 6.6 degree Celsius. The met while that there will be a marginal fall in the temperature in the next few days, the fog is going to be around till January 2.
A dense cover of fog continued to envelop the city for the entire day on Friday. While some parts of Delhi saw sunlight for some hours during the day, the others did not get to see the sun at all and remained under the cover of fog. Areas around the Yamuna, airport and outer regions of Delhi did not get to see the sun shine all through out the day. “These areas are around the water bodies, have green cover and open spaces. So they get to witness more fog than the adjoining areas,” Regional Met officer SC Bhan said.
The Met officer also informed that the fog is here to stay for another two to three days before Delhi gets some relief. “The moisture content in the air is high because of the winds coming from the Bay of Bengal. They carry moisture and is resulting in the fog in most of the northern India,” informed the airport Met officer RK Jenamani. Jenamani also informed that Friday was the first day of the season when the visibility at the runway dropped to zero and the air operations remained suspended for almost five hours in the morning.
“From two in the night till 10 in the morning, the airport was covered by a thick layer of fog. While the visibility all throughout the day remained close to 100 to 150 meters, the air operations were suspended from 5:30 to 10:30 in the morning,” said the met director. A total of 25 flights remained cancelled and about 108 flights were delayed because of the fog. Services of 23 local trains that were earlier resumed were cancelled on Friday because of heavy fog returning into the city.
