Semester system may rob DU students of college fests
The students of Delhi University might miss out on the college fests because of the semester system, but the Delhi University does not want the spirit of the university fest to die out. The Vice Chancellor has a surprise package for the students early next year. Staring with a flower show on March 2, the culture fest of the university is expected to be more than a dance-drama competition.
A film festival, dramatics festival, documentary making and presentation and a creative writing competition and a fashion show reflecting Indian culture and attire and a competition on the various Indian cuisine will to be a part of this university fest due in the month of March. A career counseling session and a professional guidance lecture will also be a part of this week-long festival.
This initiative by the university is also an attempt to nix notions that the semester system will leave no space for any extra-curricular activities. The week-long festival that will be organised around the Holi vacations will see a blend of both tradition and modern India.
The fest that will start with a flower decoration competition on March 2, will also have creative writing competition, a five-minute documentary film making and presentation. Though fests have been a part of the university and colleges every year, this year the university fest will also have a regional festival. “The festival will highlight the attire, culture and the food cuisine from various regions of the country,” informed Delhi University Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh.
A career counseling lecture and a professional guidelines lecture will be amongst the new initiatives of the Delhi University. “We will be inviting speakers who will guide the students on career and professional help,” the V-C said.
Various venues have been booked for the first week of March to organise the festival. The auditorium at the Patel Chest Institute and the University Stadium are among the venues booked for the festivals.
This initiative of the university is being looked upon as an attempt to develop a connect between the university and its students. Meanwhile, the other popular fests of colleges including Sri Ram College of Commerce, Hansraj, Hindu and other colleges of campus are yet to announce the fests. These colleges are expected to hold their fests in January and February. Many teachers of the university are of the opinion that the way the university has designed the time table for the semester system, the students will not have time for co-curricular activities; the university, however, wants to brush aside all such claims.
