DMRC exploring options for power supply under phase III
The Delhi Metro plans to construct air-conditioned Metro stations like the Airport Express stations in phase III. Some of the major stations will be ultra modern, air conditioned and power efficient during the phase. Elaborating more on phase III, Satish Kumar, director (Electrical) DMRC said, “We have plans to introduce automatic barricading technology between the tracks and major metro stations like the Airport Express corridor stations for having increased speed like the Airport Corridor.
Though the Metro consumes only 2 percent of the power demands of the Capital, we have started looking for alternatives for power supply for phase III. For this, we will construct additional nine substations, which will take the present power capacity of 150 MVA to 250 MVA. At present, the DMRC has 14 substations and in phase III the number will increase to 29.”
The Corporation has successfully completed the Capital’s first underground sub station, to feed power to run the Airport Express line and the Violet line. The Corporation officials said that it was a challenge to build the station 20 feet below the ground in Lutyens Zone on Church Road of Central Delhi. Some of the salient features of the station include being built in a record time of over a year, a gas insulation switch gear, which is imported from Germany at the cost of Rs15 crore, being 6m below the ground the drainage and ventilation have been taken care of. The station will feed the two lines, which have sub stations at Airport and Sarita Vihar respectively. New Delhi sub station, which was feeding the Airport Line, will now serve as a buffer.
The land for the sub station was allotted by DTC, which has a depot here and in return DMRC will bear the cost of revamping their depot at Kendriya Terminal.
