Nitish lags behind his deputy, son
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may have been in power for over six years but he is poorer than his son! He is also poorer than his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi and most of his Cabinet colleagues.
According to asset details made public by State legislators, Kumar is the proud owner of an old Santro car and ornaments worth Rs 52,000 only but his son, Nishant, own ornaments worth Rs11.80 lakh. Nishant also has Rs 73.60 lakh in a bank and Rs 14.92 lakh in post office. Kumar’s bank deposit holds merely Rs 38,463 while he has Rs 46,000 cash.
The Chief Minister owns an old TV set, an air-conditioner, fridge, cooler, two cows and three calves, according to details uploaded on the Government website. His moveable assets are worth Rs6.15 lakh, compared to his son’s Rs73.60 lakh. Kumar had filed income tax returns of Rs 1,62,193 for 2010-11 while Nishant has filed income tax returns of Rs2,50,410.
Similarly, Modi is richer than Kumar. Details showed that the Deputy Chief Minister has moveable assets of more than Rs 25 lakh. Even in immovable assets, Modi scores over Kumar as the latter’s current market value is Rs40 lakh whereas Modi’s immovable assets are valued at Rs 76.97 lakh.
The one difference is that Modi’s cash box has decreased from Rs 26,000 in 2010 to Rs 15,000 in the current year.
The Chief Minister has come out poorer than most of his cabinet colleagues - PK Shahi, Ashwani Kumar Choubey, Damodar Raut, Prem Kumar, Ramai Ram, Gautam Singh, Renu Kumari, Pravin Amanullah, Narendra Singh and others.
Kumar had earlier announced that all Ministers, Government officials as well as legislators would be declaring their assets every year by December 31. To maintain transparency while waging a war against corruption in the State, Kumar has made this exercise mandatory.
Altogether, 90 legislators submitted their asset details on the website till Monday and the rest are to follow. Most of them have reportedly not been able to honour the set deadline. “I was not in Patna for the past few days so I couldn’t submit the details but I’ll do so very soon,” said JD (U) MLC Sanjay Singh. Similarly, BJP MLA Rameshwar Chaurasia said, “I’m in Delhi and I’ve asked my personal assistant to submit the declaration after obtaining bank statements.”
However, Opposition leader and RJD MLA Abdul Bari Siddiqui sees no point in the exercise. “I submit my income tax returns and I also have declared assets before the Election Commission. I just fail to understand why this is needed,” asked Siddiqui. Nonetheless, he plans to upload his details very soon.
