Eye to BMC polls, DF comes out with sops
With a clear eye on the forthcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the Congress-led DF Government on Monday made three Mumbai-centric announcements, including an ambitious initiative to re-develop JJ Hospital, along the lines of New Delhi-based All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Apart from the re-development of the state-run J J Hospital which will involve construction of a 20-storey super-specialty hospital right next to the existing hospital structure, two other initiatives that the DF government came up with were: to set up two more 300-bed hospitals-cum medical colleges in the metropolis and to make it mandatory for the builders in the metropolis to reserve 20 per cent of their land for affordable housing.

“The project involving re-development of state-run JJ Hospital will involve a cost of Rs 629 crore. The objective behind our constructing a super-specialty hospital - as part of the re-development of the existing hospital, is to upgrade the JJ Hospital to the level of AIIMS in New Delhi,” chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said, while talking to media persons after the weekly State Cabinet meeting.

The DF Government, which usually holds its State Cabinet meetings on Wednesdays, had advanced the weekly Cabinet meeting to Monday, so as to beat the likely notification by the State Election Commission declaring the schedule for the to various municipal corporations and Zilla Parishads in the state. The polls are likely to be held sometime next month.

Chavan attributed the decision to construct a super-specialty hospital on the JJ Hospital premises to the fact there has been a marked increase in the number of patients visiting Government hospitals in the city over the years and the limited number of beds and facilities available at the existing hospitals.

The Chief Minister said that the State Government would invest Rs 376 crore on the construction of the super-specialty hospital, while it would construct a hostel for a hostel for medical students and doctors on the hospital premises at a cost of Rs 103 crore. The Government would incur Rs 150 crore on the purchase of state-of-the art medical equipment for the new hospital.
