After maintaining silence for several days, the State police on Monday disclosed that they have gathered certain conclusive evidences about some persons who were involved in killing the then Umerkote MLA Jagabandhu Majhi in September last year.

Replying to mediapersons in Bhubaneswar on Monday, DGP Manmohan Praharaj said the Cime Banch police investigating the case have got some clues about the persons who had shot dead the ruling party legislator at a public meeting in Umerkote on September 24 last year.

“The investigating team has got certain concrete evidences about the assailants,” the DGP said, refusing to divulge more lest it should hamper the ongoing investigation.

“In an appropriate time the identity of the assailants will be made public,” the DGP said. He, however, did not say anything as to whether the suspected assailants are Maoists or not. Ever since the brutal murder of the political leader, the State police and the State Government have been maintaining that Maoists were behind the murder of the sitting legislator.

In October last year, the Crime Branch police had released a sketch of one of the suspected assailants whom the police believe to be the mastermind behind the killing of the ruling party legislator. On the basis of examinations of eyewitnesses, a sketch resembling one of the assailants was prepared and released for public view with the hope that the public could share information about the person. It was, however, not known whether the Crime Branch got any help from the public to ascertain the identity of the assailants. But after more than three months, the top cop of the State police claims that the identities of the assailants have been established.
