Army chief holds meet to take stand over age row
Three days after the Defence Ministry rejected his statutory complaint regarding his date of birth issue, Army chief General VK Singh on Monday held a meeting with Adjutant General Lt General JP Nehra.
The Adjutant General’s branch of the Army is responsible for maintaining date of birth records of all personnel and its records show Singh’s date of birth as May 10, 1951. However, the Military Secretary branch, which looks after promotions and postings, mentions the Army chief’s date of birth as May 10, 1950.
This anomaly is the bone of contention and Singh maintains that his correct year of birth is 1951 and filed the statutory complaint to Defence Minister AK Antony three months back.
The Defence Ministry, however, rejected his plea on Friday last and maintained that according to the Ministry, Singh’s date of birth is May 10, 1950. Moreover, Antony informed Monsoon Session of Parliament last year that the chief will retire this year.
Meanwhile, the Army chief’s meeting with the Adjutant General came amidst reports that Singh may consider legal recourse on the age issue. There was no official word on what transpired at the meeting between the Army Chief and Lt General Nehra.
It may be mentioned here the Army chief met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee at his residence on Friday last. Singh later said he had called on Mukherjee to wish him happy New Year and denied knowledge about the Defence Ministry’s decision rejecting his plea.
Incidentally, Singh had met Mukherjee on December 16 also after writing a letter to Antony urging him to take a decision regarding his complaint.
