Hospital insists Sukhram not in coma
Former Telecom Minister Sukhram, who is in his eighties, faces a fresh legal tangle with conflicting pictures pertaining to his health emerging on Friday.

While Sukhram’s counsel told a city court that he was in coma, in a bid to circumvent arrest, the Metro Hospital where Sukhram is admitted categorically denied this. “It may be clarified that Sukhramji was never in coma while in hospital,” said Dr Wasi U Khan, medical superintendent.

In the morning, Sukhram’s counsel DS Patiyl told Special CBI Judge Dharmesh Sharma, “He has gone into coma after undergoing angiography, so he cannot move from hospital.”

Sharma said, “As the applicant/convict has gone into coma and judge in-charge (Special CBI Judge Sanjiv Jain) is on leave, let the matter be put up for consideration tomorrow (Saturday) at 10 am.”

Dr Sandeep Chatrath, Metro group of hospitals chief, clarified, “Sukhram’s condition is generally stable other than mild drowsiness because of low sodium.” The former Telecom Minister was admitted on December 31, 2011, after he complained of severe chest pain. Sukhram was directed by the Supreme Court to surrender before the trial court on Thursday but he avoided the same citing medical reasons.
