Resentment in Cong after list for Punjab elections
After Congress released a list of 114 candidates for Punjab Assembly elections, dissidence has broken out with those denied tickets alleging nepotism and favouritism in the ticket distribution exercise.
Alleging nepotism, Congress leaders and their loyalists on Friday launched protest against State’s senior leadership. Late on Thursday night, Congress released the list of 114 candidates and withheld announcement for the constituencies of Sujanpur, Bhoa and Mansa.
While a few who were denied tickets have decided to revolt and contest as an independent while others have decided to remain in the party but vowed to work for the defeat of the official party candidate. Punjab Mahila Congress president Malti Thapar was seeking ticket from Dharamkot but expressed resentment at not getting party nomination. She said, 553 women aspirants had applied for ticket but only 12 have manged it in the list of 114.
“At least 25 women candidates might have got the seats. I do not know the exact reason of such a low turn over for women candidates. But party is supreme. I will go with it,” said Thapar while talking to The Pioneer.
Former SGPC member Kaka Surjit Singh Lohgarh has managed to get the ticket from Dharamkot constituency. Lohgarh was recently inducted into the party with two leaders of People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) Jagbir Brar and Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon.
Meanwhile, Dhillon failed to get ticket, Brar, current MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment succeeded in getting party nomination amidst resentment in Congress cadre in his constituency.
Gurkanwal Kaur, daughter of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh and former chairman of improvement trust Tejendra Bittu were ticket seekers from Jalandhar Cantonment. They had launched protest when Brar joined Congress leaving PPP.
Likewise, Congress member Gurpreet Singh from Chamkaur Shaib has also registered his resentment against selection. Indpendent MLA, Charanjit Channi who had joined congress last year has replaced Singh.
Singh said that he was a party member for more than 30 years. “Leadership has neglected my contribution and hard work. Now I have decided to contest as an independent,” said Singh.
Similarly, another aspirant, Ashok Sharma, ex-MLA from Pathankot has resigned from primary membership of the party and decided to contest as independent after he failed to get party’s ticket. Raman Bhalla has got the approval of the leadership to contest from Pathnakot.
Deepinder Singh Dhillon, a Congress ticket seeker from Derra Bassi, has also announced to contest as an independent candidate from the same Assembly segment quitting the party. On Friday, he addressed a gathering of his supporters and registered protest against State leadership. Former Minister Jasdeep Singh Randhawa gets ticket from Derra Bassi.
