Cong to target Maya over ‘land’ in UP
Even though Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s efforts to make land acquisition a major poll plank has suffered a setback with the Parliamentary Standing Committee delaying its report on the Bill, the Congress is not discouraged.
The party has instead decided to target BSP supremo Mayawati in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls for acquiring farmers’ land and transferring it to builders and for the Formula 1 race. At the same time, it will project itself as the “masiha of Dalits” by highlighting the efforts made by the party to construct a memorial of Father of Indian Constitution Bhimrao Ambedkar in Mumbai.
Congress Screening Committee in-charge for the UP Mohan Prakash said on Friday, “Mayawati has taken away thousands of acres of land from farmers and gave it for Formula I race — a sports about which most of the people in India are not even aware of. She also forcibly acquired land to help rich builders. On the other hand, the Congress has always been working for providing land to landless farmers and housing for homeless through programmes like Indira Awas Yojna.”
The Congress Government in Maharashtra and at the Centre made tremendous efforts to acquire 12.5 acre of Indu Mill land adjacent to Ambedkar’s Samadhi in Dadar so that a grand mausoleum for the Dalit leader could be constructed, he pointed out.
The Congress thinks the Ambedkar memorial will be a befitting reply to Mayawati’s Ambedkar Park which has statues of her and her parents.
Meanwhile, after holding out dole to minorities and SC/STs by giving the former 4.5 per cent reservation in the OBC category and deciding to clear the backlog of vacancies meant for Dalit quota, the Congress has decided to focus on Most Backward Class and nomadic tribes by incorporating in its manifesto programmes providing them incentives in jobs, education and housing.
The Congress is contemplating having specific programmes for socio-economic development of MBC who have suffered during the past two-decade rule of the BSP, SP and BJP, he said. A panel on the lines of the Sachar Committee could be constituted to recommend measures for their development, he said. He pointed out that in UP the Congress has given a number of tickets to candidates belonging to these MBCs like Nishad, Vishwakarma and Prajapati.
For nomadic tribes like Banjara, which face a lot of harassment for being branded as criminal tribes, already Renke Commission has made recommendations, but it could not be implemented as the matter involved a number of States. So, the Congress has decided to have special programmes specific to them in Uttar Pradesh in its manifesto which will soon be released, he added.
