Anna relents, Cong breathes easy
The Congress has heaved a sigh of relief over Team Anna’s decision not to campaign against the party in the five States going to polls in the next couple of months. Senior Congress leader and Law Minister Salman Khurshid said that it would save the party a lot of efforts to counter their negative campaigning.
Khurshid, who is going to UP on Saturday to monitor the party’s campaigning, admitted that had Team Anna insisted on campaigning against the party, it would have created difficulties for the party.
“It is always better that the social organisations should support the party, but if that it not possible then at least they should not oppose. So this is definitely a better scenario,” he said.
However, Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi launched a scathing attack on Team Anna member Shanti Bhushan for alleging that the political pressure from the ruling party was responsible for him being forced to pay stamp duty. Singhvi said that it reflected the civil society group’s “uni-focal animosity” against the Congress.
Terming Team Anna’s approach as “biased, one-sided, negative and consistently critical commentary about the Congress”, he said that if they have so much animosity against the Congress then such people should join the political movement and fight the Congress directly.
