Cong miffed with NC hogging J&K limelight

The spin doctors of the Omar Abdullah Government seem to have widened the gap between the alliance partners — Congress and the National Conference — by choosing to ignore a large number of leaders of the Pradesh Congress Committee on the occasion of completion of Omar’s three years of rule in the coalition Government.

A day after the State Government organised the grand show of strength at the lawns of the State civil secretariat, several senior Congress leaders, unhappy with the party high command over ignoring their requests for rotating the post of Chief Minister, blamed the selected few in the kitchen Cabinet of Omar Abdullah of according them step-motherly treatment and ignoring them completely at the planning stage.

The Congress leaders in private said, “The coordination committee of the alliance partners never met to discuss the planning of this grand event. If our leaders cannot sit together and discuss organisation of such big events what is the purpose of forming the coordination committee?”

The leaders of the Pradesh Congress Committee were not aware that the State Government was planning a grand show of strength to celebrate Omar’s three years in office. In contrast to this, the National Conference leaders were well aware and updated. “The invitations were distributed selectively. The State Government employees were invited on the occasion to fill the chairs in the lawns but several senior leaders were informed about the incident only one day in advance and many others were ignored”. Absence of several party legislators and members of the legislative council created an embarrassing situation for the Congress party during the function.

Some of the Congress Ministers were unhappy even with the publication of performance and achievement report released by the Chief Minister on the occasion. “It is not a performance report of the coalition Government, it is a photo album of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah”, a senior Congress leader said while searching for images of the Congress Ministers and other National Conference Ministers.

Sources in the Congress party claimed that several senior Congress leaders also raised the issue with their chief Saifuddin Soz who arrived to attend the homage ceremony of deceased party MLC Yashpaul Khauria. The Congress leaders urged Prof Soz to sort out the issue of coordination with the National Conference top brass during the forthcoming coordination committee meeting.

Meanwhile, reacting to the grand celebrations organised by the State Government, chairman of the Panthers Party Bhim Singh on Friday ridiculed the slogan courage, vision and dynamism of Omar Abdullah. He said it is true Omar Abdullah has shown courage in declaring that J&K was not an integral part of the Union of India. He certainly has courage to massacre through his police about 120 mostly school-going kids last year. This was a highly courageous act on the part of the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister demonstrated courage and vision to sort out corruption scandal of Rs 1.18 crore involving himself, his father and the complainants, all affiliated with his political party.

He certainly has shown courage by dismissing the registration of an FIR even on the mysterious death of his party’s senior functionary in custody who was detained on his orders though he had no competence to do so.

The Chief Minister has demonstrated courage by denouncing AFSPA and declaring that he would remove the central law. He certainly has shown courage to reduce 50 per cent of the salary of the fresh recruits in the Government jobs.
