SIT passes Ishrat Jahan encounter case to CBI

The Gujarat High Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday and formally handed over the Ishrat Jahan encounter death case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A Division Bench of the high court comprising Justice Jayant Patel and Justice Abhilasha Kumari had ruled last month that the 2004 encounter was ‘not genuine’ and asked the SIT to hand over the case to the CBI for further investigation.

A fresh FIR has also been registered in the case as per the high court order. College girl from Mumbai suburb Mumbra, Ishrat Jahan, her friend Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai and two other suspected LeT operatives Amjad Ali and Zeeshan Johar were killed on the outskirts of the city in the wee hours of June 15, 2004 when they were allegedly on a mission to assassinate Chief Minister Narendra Modi in State capital Gandhinagar.

Ishrat’s mother and father demanded a CBI probe into the killings claiming that their children were no terrorists and the encounter was fake. A probe by the high court appointed SIT and found the encounter to be ‘not genuine’ even as Central intelligence input in 2004 had mentioned about Ishrat as LeT operative.

The CBI team which was handed over the documents and case papers on Friday was led by Inspector General VV Laxminarayan. The documents handed over also included English translations of various case papers and testimonies.
