ADMK cadre lay siege to Tamil magazine office
AIADMK cadre on Saturday morning attacked and ransacked Tamil bi-weekly Nakkheeran’s office in Chennai and in other places in the State.
They were protesting against a write-up that appeared in the magazine terming ADMK general secretary and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa a beef-eater. The write-up, titled Maadu Thinnum Maami Naan meaning ‘I am a beef-eating maami ’ (as Brahmin women are addressed with respect) appeared as the cover story on January 7).
ADMK men assaulted the watchman of Nakkheeran office in Royapettah and damaged vehicles. They threw stones and barged into the building to ransack the office. They took away copies of the magazines from various vendors and stands and burnt them. Similar protests were reported from the rest of the State.
Partymen were infuriated by the attempt to tarnish the CM’s image. The article was in the narrative form, with Jayalalithaa speaking of instances following expulsion of her close friend Sasikalaa Natarajan and her family from ADMK and her residence in Poes Garden.
Jayalalithaa is quoted as denying to a friend that there was any justification in the accusation that after sending out Sasikalaa and the rest of the “Mannagudi Mafia”, the “Mylapore Mafia” was allowed to enter her residence.
The narrative from Jayalalithaa claims that her mentor MGR had assured his party seniors that her Brahmin background would not be a liability as she had made beef preparations for him.
No arrests have been made so far and only former Chief Minister and DMK chief M Karunanidhi has reacted against the attack on the Press as “unacceptable in a democratic country”.
