CM fined for skipping court appearance

CM fined for skipping court appearance
The Delhi High Court on Friday imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dik**** for her failure to appear before the court in a defamation suit against Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta.

The attempt of Dik****’s counsel to seek repeated adjournment in the matter irked Justice Kailash Gambhir who imposed the fine on Dik**** with a direction to be present before the bench on the March 15, which is also the next date of hearing. The Chief Minister was to appear before the court in person to present her case in the defamation case related to power tariff. However, she had failed to comply by the court’s directions on three previous occasions. The case relates to the defamation suit filed by the Chief Minister against Gupta last year wherein she had alleged that Gupta had erected hoardings in several areas accusing her government of playing in the hands of private power distribution companies. Dik**** has demanded a token Rs1 as damages in her suit.

Gupta’s counsel Ajay Digpaul opposed Dikshi’s plea saying for the last four hearings, her counsel had only sought adjournment without filing the reply. Digpaul said the suit was not maintainable in the high court. As per the suit, Gupta had accused Dik**** of playing into the hands of the private power distribution firms.
