No question of renaming Chandni Chowk: Abbi
A day after snub from the Delhi Government, Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi on Friday claimed that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) never intended to rename the historical Chandni Chowk after Sachin Tendulkar. Stating that as the opposition has no major issues before going for civic body election, the rumour was created by them to take advantage in the coming MCD election. The Mayor said that no functionary of the Corporation made a statement on renaming Delhi’s cultural and historical Chandni Chowk.
“MCD is very much concerned and committed to preserve the culture, history and tehzeeb of the Walled City, including Chandni Chowk. Therefore, there is no question of changing its name and its sanctity,” she said. Alleging that that Delhi Chief Minister is playing politics, Abbi said, “Delhi CM Sheila Dik**** should not play with the emotions of the citizens of the city by raising such propaganda.” She said the rumours of renaming of Chandni Chowk after Sachin Tendulkar were triggered as the MCD elections are round the corner.
“Opponents with no major issues to go to polls are taking the help of petty politics to tide over the people’s anger. The reactions of Dik**** came so sharply and promptly as if she and her office were waiting with eagerness to get some issue out of nothing. I also took this opportunity to remind Dik**** to first set her house in order, work out on cases of corruption and go to people with concrete issues.”
