‘Vibrations from Airport Metro causing cracks in nearby houses’
India’s first high-speed Airport Metro is allegedly posing threat to the lives of residents of around 100 households. Over a thousand residents of the Shahbad Mohammadpur village located in South West Delhi claim that the immense vibrations caused due to the high speed of the trains are responsible for causing cracks in their households. The weakened houses can collapse any moment, they said.
Sonu Solanki, a resident of the village, said, “The situation has been compounded due to the recent trails to increase the train speed from 105 km/hr to 120 km/hr. We fear for our lives as our houses can collapse any moment due to their location above the tunnel through which the trains pass. The walls and ceilings have cracked due to immense vibrations and the day is not far when a major incident occurs, causing trouble to our lives. We have complained to the Delhi Metro and Reliance Infrastructure, concessionaire for the corridor, on the grave issue several times, but no action has been taken.”
DMRC has, however, taken a serious view on the matter and has ordered a detailed report on the issue. A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson said, “The location of the corridor is located 17 m below the village and cannot cause threat to the lives of the villagers. However, we have taken the complaints seriously and have asked CRRI to look into the matter. Some of our DMRC officials visited the village personally and analysed the magnitude of vibrations caused by running the trains on different speeds.”
The village is located behind the Delhi Airport Terminal 3 and is very close to Dwarka sector 8. The underground Airport Express line passes through the village and goes to Dwarka sector 21. Solanki added, “The extent of the vibrations is so much that every time a train passes at the interval of 15 minutes, it causes even the vessels to shake.”
