Panic in Odisha as gas leaks at pesticide unit
At least 40 villagers undergo treatment

Panic spread among the residents of Maitapur area under the Simulia police station in Baleswar district after they began to experience an irritating smell of gas late on Saturday evening.

The gas emanated from a neighbouring private pesticide manufacturing unit Krishi Rasayan. The unit near National Highway-5 on the border between Baleswat and Bhadrak has been functioning over the last two decades.

It is controlled by its Kolkata head office.

Sources said on Saturday evening, while the workers were heating a solid chemical substance in a drum, reportedly, it burst and gas began to emanate. As a result, the residents of Sabira, Jagdalpur, Ranital, Muruna, Mohanty Pokhari and Jiragadia villages in around two km radius of the pesticide unit developed giddiness and started vomiting after smelling the gas. Fearing further trouble, they rushed to a nearby private health care unit for treatment.

Sources claimed over 30 people, including five minors and 20 women had primary treatment from the centre. A few went to some hospitals in Bhadrak too.

When asked about the incident, Baleswar Collector Akhil Bihari Ota said, “I have sought an inquiry report from the ADM, currently at the site, as well as from the Pollution Control Board over the incident.”

Though the administrations of both the districts did not confirm about the gas leak, police said panic spread in the localities near the pesticide plant after smelling the poisonous gas emanating from it.
