BJP hits pause button on Plan Kushwaha

BJP hits pause button on Plan Kushwaha
On the backfoot over the induction of former Uttar Pradesh BSP member Babu Singh Kushwaha into its fold, the BJP on Sunday accepted his request to suspend his membership in the party.

The BJP hopes to quell the controversy that was generated within the party and outside over his induction. Kushwaha had, on Saturday, requested BJP president Nitin Gadkari to put his membership under suspension till he is proved innocent of “allegations” of corruption levelled against him. Gadkari accepted his resignation.

“Kushwahaji wrote to theparty president asking him to suspend his membership until he is proven innocent. The president has accepted it,” said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain.

The CBI had raided Kushwaha’s premises in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi just after a day he was inducted in the BJP. Several party leaders like MPs Maneka Gandhi, Kirti Azad and Yogi Adityanath and state in-charge Uma Bharti also protested his inclusion.

The former BSP member’s induction also gave the Congress, which itself is on the defensive over the non-passage of Lokpal Bill in Parliament in the last session, an opportunity to launch counter offensive against the BJP.

Kushwaha’s move is being seen as an attempt by the BJP to douse the in-house fire and blunt the attack by the rival Congress. “Till the time the allegations against me are proved wrong, I will keep the BJP membership under suspension,” Kushwaha had said in a letter to Gadkari.

In his letter, he had said that he did not want the BJP to suffer due to him and that the Congress was targeting him due to his opposition to 4.5 per cent quota for minority within the OBC quota.

Kushwaha is a prominent OBC leader and was once a trusted lieutenant of BSP supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

He was sacked from the post of Family Welfare Minister in April last year following his alleged involvement in a multi-crore rural health scam.

The CBI is investigating the scam and the death of three senior doctors in his department during his term as Minister.
