Five killed in Brahmaputra Mail accident
Five people were killed and at least nine injured when a goods train collided with the Delhi-bound Brahmaputra Mail at Karnpurato station near Sahibganj in Jharkhand on Wednesday morning due to a technical snag in its engine. The goods train suddenly rolled down and crashed in the sleeper coach of Brahmaputra Mail which was passing the site. Six railway staff, including the driver and assistant driver have been suspended after the accident.
According to Railway officials, the deceased have been identified as Bijoy Roy, Giriya Devi (55 yrs.) Unidentified (Male 25 years) Dinesh Mahaldar (Male 50 years) Narendra - (Male 38 years)
The sleeper Coach S9 of the Brahmputra Mail got derailed after the accident. “The goods train had been standing on the loop line due to some problem in the engine but suddenly it rolled down and dashed into one of the bogies of the Brahmputra Mail,” said Railway PRO Sameer Goswami of Malda Division. He said that six railway staff had been suspended.
The accident relief train along with the railway officials reached the accident site at 7.10 am from Sahibganj, a few hours after the accident. The injured were rushed to the nearby Sadar hospital in Karnpurato.
The Railway ministry announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the immediate kin of the deceased while the injured will get a sum of Rs. 50,000. The passengers who got minor injuries will also get Rs 10,000 as compensation.
First lot of the rear nine coaches of Brahmaputra Mail left Karnpurato station with the passengers at 8.20 am. The passengers were served free food and drinking water along with milk to the children at Barharwa station. The train left for New Delhi via Malda-Barauni route.
Second lot of the other 13 coaches left the accident site at 9.55 am for New Delhi via Sahibganj-Keol route. The passengers were served free food, water and milk at Sahibganj.
Six on-duty railway staff including driver and assistant driver of the goods train were suspended immediately by the railway officials. The suspended staff members are driver of the goods train RK Paswan, assistant driver AK Singh, guard Ajay Kumar, loco inspector AN Yadav, on-duty assistant station master of Karnpurato along with porters Aniruddh Kumar, and Neeraj Kumar.
At least four trains were detained on Barharwa-Sahibganj section following the accident. Some of the trains got diverted to Maldah-Katihar-Barauni and Kiul-Mokama-Katihar route.
The Barharwa-Sahibganj main line of Malda Division which was blocked due to accident since morning was cleared by afternoon on Wednesday and the train services on the section resumed as normal.
