ND Tiwari nephew attacked on way to filing nomination
Maneesh Tiwari, nephew of former Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister ND Tiwari and Congress candidate in the 2012 State Assembly election, was attacked by some persons in Bazpur area on his way to file his nomination papers from Gadarpur Assembly constituency in Udham Singh Nagar district on Wednesday.
Local party leaders said it was the handiwork of Congressmen who were deprived of a ticket to contest the election. However, none of the culprits has been identified.
Due to the attack taking place, Tiwari was unable to file his papers. An FIR would be registered against unknown persons, said police.
Tiwari, who escaped the assault unhurt, is safe, Bajpur police said. A vehicle that was part of his cavalcade was damaged in the incident.
Tiwari could not file his nomination papers from Gadarpur constituency on Wednesday. The time of filing of nomination papers is between 11 am and 3 pm, Returning Officer, Gadarpur Assembly constituency, Ashish Bhatgai, told The Pioneer. He confirmed that no one identifying himself as Maneesh Tiwari turned up by 3 pm to file nomination papers.
Tiwari told this correspondent over phone that a crowd consisting of 80-100 people gheraoed his cavalcade on way from Kashipur to Gadarpur and asked him to return to Kashipur. They indulged in stone pelting as a result of which one of the cars was severely damaged. Tiwari’s uncle, Durga Dutt Tiwari, who is brother of veteran leader ND Tiwari, received injuries on the leg.
Although Tiwari escaped without injuries, the incident has come as a major security challenge for officials.
As Section 144 is in force in the district due to the ongoing poll procedure and the model code of conduct is being enforced to ensure free and fair elections, this incident here has taken many by surprise.
Although his papers were ruined during the attack, Tiwari is believed to have purchased a form and is likely to file his nomination papers on Thursday.
