‘Power politics’ in Kashmir stings Omar this winter
Even after restoring snapped power lines feeding electricity to the Kashmir valley, the State Government headed by Omar Abdullah is reeling under the impact of the ‘power politics’ on ground zero.
The main Opposition party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the leaders of the coalition Government have locked horns with each other and are bent upon exposing each others role behind the grim power crisis.
A day after the PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti labelled Omar a ‘wailing widow’ who is giving out an impression of a “headless chicken” Omar refused to comment directly over the allegations of mishandling power crisis in the State.
Addressing the Maha gram sabha of sarpanches in Parade ground Omar, questioned the intentions of the PDP leadership behind raising the issue of power crisis in the State especially when the State is facing harsh weather conditions.
“Those who are raising hoarse cry on availability of power could not even help generate a single MW during their tenure. “Those who have covered their eyes with black glasses only see dark”, he added.
“If you ask me they have not even added even 1 MW to the State kitty. During their time they had even kept Baglihar power project in the cold storage and went on to stop work on the Sawalakote power project. Omar said, “in contrast we are focused on our job and working tirelessly to improve the power distribution, transmission and enhance power generation capacity.
Interacting with mediapersons, Omar said that the PDP leaders are feeling frustrated and threatened. “The more they speak against me i feel happy. I feel threatened when they go silent.”
The Maha Gram Sabha of sarpanches was organsied by the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department to highlight the achievements of the State Government.
Notwithstanding the austerity drive, the Government released a separate set of publications listing out its achievements. On January 5, the State Government had also released a comprehensive compendium of performance report and achievements of the alliance Government.
Omar added that bringing Pubic Service Guarantee Act (PSGA) is one of the biggest initiatives of his Government for public empowerment and good governance.
He said “We are examining two proposals of creating a separate department for implementation of PSGA under the overall control of the Chief Minister or a commission like that of State Right to Information Commission to be headed by an independent authority to enforce the provisions of PSGA in the State”.
The Chief Minister said he has directed bringing some services of Home Department under the ambit of the Act which includes issuance of copy of FIR and character certificates.
The issuance of MGNREGA card has also been asked to be made time bound under the PSGA.
