Small is big for top carmakers
Luxury carmaker is now yearning for volumes bet it BMW, Mercedes or Audi in the domestic market and the ongoing Auto Expo 2012 show their commitment on the same.
While success of X1, SUV of BMW has forced Audi to unveil Q3 at the Auto Expo, Mercedes is developing its own small SUV GLC to take on BMW X1 and Audi Q3. Audi Q3 was launched in 2011 in the global market and now it will be launched this year but Mercedes GLC will take around two years to be launched in India.
The introduction of the X1 mini SUV has helped BMW sail past Mercedes and become No 1 luxury carmaker in India. Audi is banking on Q3 to take its growth story ahead and the product is said to be the cheapest one that Audi will have for India this year. While BMW X1 is priced starts at Rs 22 lakh and Rs23 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi for the petrol and the diesel variants, pricing of Audi Q3 could be more or less the same.
BMW is now supposed to grow even faster as it has introduced four variants of its Mini at the Auto Expo. While the Mini Cooper will be priced Rs 24.9 lakh, the Mini Cooper S comes with a price tag of Rs27.9 lakh. The Mini Convertible is priced at Rs 29.9 lakh, while the Mini Cooper S Countryman has a price tag of Rs 31.9 lakh.
As regards other carmakers, Maruti Suzuki unveiled its compact concept SUV XA Alpha, which is likely to be launched in the next two years, Ford unveiled compact SUV EcoSport to be manufactured at its Chennai plant and launched this year.
Mahindra & Mahindra has launched Rexton at the expo which will hit showrooms in the next six months while Skoda would launch it’s SUV by 2013 from Volkswagen Group’s stable.
