‘DMK allying with Cong only to keep BJP out’
Pressured by his party functionaries to end the alliance with the Congress at the Centre, DMK president M Karunanidhi told his party that his preference to align with the Congress was simply to keep the ‘communal’ BJP out of power at the Centre.
Addressing his party general council on Friday, in his speech, which was released to the media late on Friday night, Karunanidhi contended that the Congress seems to be the only party fitting DMK’s choice for non-communal party for nation’s development. He said that he was aware of the party’s thought process on Congress role in his daughter Kanimozhi and former Telecom Minister A Raja being jailed for their alleged role in 2G spectrum scam, but for him future of the nation was more important.
“For me, Kanimozhi’s grief is not big. Rather, I don’t want to make the nation a coterie of communal elements. I won’t allow minorities to be hunted like they were in Gujarat,” Karunanidhi said. “I am not saying this to put the Congress in the saddle as they have not done us any great favour. I would even extend my support to someone from Punjab
who wishes to put the nation on the path of development,” Karunanidhi reasoned with his party.
“How can I create an atmosphere for the BJP (candidate) to become Prime Minister? So what is the alternative? No other party has a candidate for the post. Among the friends and parties, it is only Congress which does not allow communalism and practices rational thinking,” he went on to add. He reminded that DMK contested alone for the civic polls instead of aligning with the Congress.
