Jaya wants all 40 LS seats as birthday gift
All is set for birthday celebration of AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa in about a fortnight from now.

The difference is that she is back as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after six years. The difference is that there is much expectation in her party that she is probably making it big nationally and would play a key role in the country’s politics. The difference is that her words carry a lot of meaning and is absorbed with a new deference.

Jayalalithaa’s statement on Friday addressing her party has kindled a new enthusiasm as she said: “Winning all the 40 seats in the coming Lok Sabha polls would be the best present my dear partymen you can give me and I request you to start working towards this goal.”

The leader who is turning 64 later this month had in mind the Lok Sabha polls which are two years away where Tamil Nadu would provide a quota of 39 seats and Puducherry one. She appealed that the cadre desist from any ostentatious events. She took the opportunity to take a potshot at her bete noire DMK president M Karunanidhi, whose 87th birthday last year as Chief Minister was celebrated “lavishly” by his partymen that people were not amused. The anti-incumbency wave that followed helped the AIADMK to get a majority in the April 13, 2011 Assembly polls in the State.

She noted that even former Chief Minister and party founder MG Ramachandran did not celebrate his birthday in a grand manner and that he would not meet visitors that day. Similarly, she urged her party cadre not to plan any grand celebrations and instead concentrate on winning all the 40 seats for the Lok Sabha polls, which would be the best birthday gift. She would like to tread a path of simplicity.

“It is nine months since the AIADMK has been in Government. We have not been involved in any sort of extravaganza and even many Government functions have been launched via video-conferencing, to save taxpayers’ money. You should take a cue from this and celebrate my birthday in a simple manner and by distributing welfare to others,” she wrote in her statement.

Now this is neither the first time that Jayalalithaa has asked her partymen to desist from lavish celebrations nor is it the first time that she has made a plea for ensuring victory in an election. In fact before her birthday last year, Jayalalithaa had pleaded the same — work towards a victory in the Assembly polls.

Jayalalithaa, no doubt, is looking towards a more ambitious political role to play and a clean sweep is necessary. She is aiming to beat the anti-incumbency factor that may arise out of the recent bus fare and milk price hikes. The proposed power tariff hike too has not gone down well with the people, even though she has explained the power situation to the people. Therefore, she needs the support of her party in changing the understanding of the people on her line.

The efforts began last December when she made her political ambition clear stating that the party could even be in a position to elect the next Prime Minister.

Sycophancy had ruled her party, when even senior leaders as well as her party cadre would take extreme steps like walking on fire, pierce tongue or nose as part of a vow or role down the roads to temples to pray for her. Her birthday would be celebrated with much fun and fervour in the initial days of her earlier tenure. But for about a decade, Jayalalithaa has been advising her party cadre to engage in social service instead of making lavish spending. She would rush away from Chennai so that she would not have to meet visitors on her birthday.

This is in stark contrast to how Karunanidhi celebrates, who makes it a point to find time to meet his cadre and accept their greetings. However, given his age and political stature in the recent past and the role he has played in national politics, the celebrations have been fairly grand.

To observe Jayalalithaa’s 64th birthday, the Directorate of Environment and Forests had made aforestation plans. The department will plant 64 lakh saplings all over the State, which according to Poes Garden is a better way of observing the leader’s birthday.

Interestingly, an All India Women’s Kabbadi tournament would be held from February 24 to 27 in Tirunelveli, organised by the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University where 28 teams from universities across the country are expected to take part
