‘Only BJP can fulfill the dream of Telangana’

The Bharatiya Janata Party, badly marginalised in State politics over the last one decade, has managed to mark its presence by forcefully espousing the cause of a separate Telangana State.

Stressing that only the BJP had the necessary political will to carve out Telangana, its State BJP president, G Kishan Reddy, concluded his three week long yatra Telangana Poru. Addressing a public meet to mark the conclusion of his tour through the region, Kishan Reddy said that both the ruling Congress party and the main Opposition Telugu Desam Party had betrayed the people of the region by going back on their promises. “Telangana will become a reality only after the BJP comes to power at the Centre”, he declared. “The people have also realised it”, he said.

Interestingly, the party brought its Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh as the guest speaker to the rally to remind the people that it was the BJP-led NDA Government which had carved out the three new States of Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. “It was the 1969 Telangana movement which had inspired us to fight for our State”, Raman Singh said. But he rued that even after so many decades of struggle the demand for a Telangana State remains unfulfilled.

Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu tried to dispel the impression that the party was against Andhra region. “The party is not against any region. It is in support of smaller States on the ground of administrative convenience and to provide good governance”, he said. He demanded that the UPA Government should immediately move a Bill in the Parliament for the formation of the Telangana State.

Though Kishan Reddy’s tour was successful to the extent of portraying his party as pro-Telangana State, it could not garner as much support as he hoped because of the indifferent attitude of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and Telangana Joint Action Committee. In fact the failure of the TRS in declaring its support to Kishan Reddy’s yatra has resulted in growing schism between the two parties.
