BJP joins anti-NCTC chorus
Promising its support to any concrete step by the Central Government in the fight against terror, the BJP on Friday, however, criticised the UPA regime over the NCTC dispute saying the proposed body does not keep the State Governments in the loop and breaches federal autonomy.
It said the reservation expressed by some States against such a body was a virtual no confidence against the Manmohan Singh Government.
“Several State Governments, including UPA ally TC, and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik have protested against the NCTC. States are not happy with the way the Centre is functioning. This (NCTC) is against federal autonomy. It has cast a real shadow on the Central Government,” BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.
The Rajya Sabha MP alleged the Centre does not want to keep State Governments in the loop in the fight against terror and its belief that States will not act is misplaced. “This lack of confidence in the States against the Centre is a matter of concern. It is a virtual no-confidence against the Centre,” Rudy said. Incidentally, the BJP had welcomed the idea of forming NCTC when it was mooted post 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
Seven Chief Ministers, including West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, have opposed NCTC which will be inaugurated on March 1. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is against the proposal, along with Chief Ministers Naveen Patnaik (Odisha), Nitish Kumar (Bihar) and J Jayalalithaa (Tamil Nadu) among others. TDP has also spoken against NCTC. Asked if this was an attempt by non-BJP leaders to form a Third Front, Rudy said “You are free to analyse this your way. We would not have any problems with such analysis.”
