BJP demands CAG audit of power firms’ accounts

Terming the latest hike in power tariff as an arbitrary move of the DERC, Delhi BJP on Friday demanded an audit into the accounts of the power distribution companies by the CAG.

The party said the seven per cent fuel surcharge cannot be recovered from the consumers.

Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta said until the CAG completes audit of the accounts of three power companies of Delhi, they should neither be allowed to increase power tariff nor recover fuel surcharge. In a joint statement issued by Gupta and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Professor Vijay Kumar Malhotra, they said that the DERC should work in the interests of the people.

“This Regulatory Authority was constituted for the interests of the common man. But it is being observed that the DERC is working in favour of the power companies since its formation. It is paying less heed to the people’s grievances,” the Delhi BJP president said. The decision taken by the DERC allowing the power companies to recover fuel surcharge is in favour of the power companies. “As per the decision, power companies have been allowed to recover fuel surcharge every third month. The companies recovered fuel surcharge at the rate of seven per cent in February, March and April 2012. Now they have been allowed to recover additional fuel surcharge from four to seven per cent,” he said.

The BJP leaders said in every quarter months, the DERC will give permission to recover increased fuel surcharge to the companies. “This way the power companies shall increase power tariff by 28 per cent in the name of fuel surcharge in one year. The companies will loot the consumers with both hands because they have demanded Delhi Government and the DERC to recover increased power tariff up to 70 per cent,” Gupta said.

He also criticised the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dik**** for giving a bailout package of `500 crore to the power companies even after strong protest by the people. “The companies are cheating the consumers in various ways. The fast reading electronic meters installed by them have already increased the power bills by two to three times. Is it justified to recover fuel surcharge even after this?” he asked.
