Cops submit plan for security of North-East girl students
The plan of action and the standing order issued by the Delhi Police Commissioner vis-à-vis girl students from the North Eastern (N-E) States has been accepted as a bench mark by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Now, the MHA is going to advise other States to follow the Delhi Police model for creating a congenial atmosphere for the girls from the ‘Seven Sisters States’. The Delhi Police on Friday submitted a detailed plan of action for the safety and security of the girl students from N-E States. The move has come in the wake of the tragic suicide of Dana Sangama, the niece of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangama. Dana had committed suicide a few days back, creating an uproar about the discriminatory treatment meted out to the students, especially the harassment of girls from the North Eastern States.
Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said that the Union Home Minister made an announcement in this regard on the floor of the Rajya Sabha while replying to a Calling Attention motion by the Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley. Delhi Police is deeply involved in planning and execution of many welfare measures for securing girl students from the N-E States.
Commissioner of Police BK Gupta had made an elaborate presentation before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on MHA. Gupta countered the claim by dishing out statistics that there has been a sharp decline in the case of molestation as far as girls from N-E States. Only five to six cases were reported during the last one year and there has been only one incident of rape of a woman from North East. It constitutes less than one percent of the total crimes. “What we have done is, wherever North east women or girls are staying, suppose they are staying in a pocket of 300, we have deployed a PCR van, there is a picket and there is motor cycle patrolling. There are three women Deputy Commissioners of Police posted in districts. In the North Campus, there is a woman officer and in the South Campus also, there is a woman officer. Every second month, they hold a meeting with the students and the people from the North east. We are quite conscious of this fact that girls coming particularly from NE states have to be provided security,” the CP said.
The Delhi Police chief further submitted that they have issued a directive under section 144 of the CrPC to media houses, hotels, malls, BPO employees have drop all the female employees to their respective places of residence. There are as many as 5,000 vehicles that ply in Delhi between 12 am at night till early morning. “For both North and South campus of Delhi University, we have created police stations that are headed by women police officers and about 80 percent of the staff is women officers.”
