The BJP is aiming to increase its organisational strength by adding at least 20 lakh new members across the country ahead of the next Parliamentary election. Out of power from Centre for more than eight years now, the principal Opposition has set a target of bringing around 50,000 new members to the party fold in every Parliamentary constituency.

“I have personally set a target of making 10,000 new members and have completed 980 by now,” BJP chief Nitin Gadkari said at a function here to felicitate newly elected mayors in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP has won 10 out of total 12 mayoral positions in the just concluded election in Uttar Pradesh, where its performance had touched a new low in this year’s Assembly poll.

Admitting that party would come to power at centre only with it improving its performance in UP, Gadkari hoped that the ‘good show’ in urban bodies’ election would ‘electrify’ the party cadre ahead of next electoral challenge.

“Winning these elections was a tough task for us. Samajwadi Party was tacitly supporting some candidates fighting against us and so was the BSP. Only these two parties did not contest on their party symbol,” Gadkari said.

The BJP chief is also excited with a surge in the vote share of the BJP and a downfall in that of the Congress. Lucknow mayor Dinesh Sharma has won for the second time and with a margin of 1.7 Lakh votes. Similarly, BJP candidate Saroj Pathak won the seat of Chairperson, Kannauj Municipal Council, by more than 8,000 votes. Kannauj is the bastion of the ruling Samajwadi Party.

The party senses a good opportunity to improve its performance and hopes to come to power in the next elections as the UPA government is facing challenges on several fronts.
