Cartoonist Trivedi sent to police custody till Sep 16
A day after he was arrested on charges of insulting national emblem and other national symbols, political cartoonist Aseem Trivedi was remanded by a city court in police custody till September 16.
Kanpur-based Trivedi, who was placed under arrest immediately after he surrendered before the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) police on Saturday evening, was on Sunday produced before a holiday court, which remanded him in police custody for a week. Booked under Section 124 (A) of the Indian Penal Code for sedition and for various other offences under Information Technology Act and Prevention of Insults to National Symbols Act, 1971, Trivedi has been accused of posting seditious content on his web site.
Trivedi’s arrest follows a non-bailable warrant issued by a city court last month, as part of investigations being carried out by the BKC police on the basis of a complaint filed against him by an RPI activist Amit Katarnayea
The complainant had, among other things, alleged that Trivedi had put up banners mocking the Indian constitution at social activist Anna Hazare’s rally held at Bandra-Kurla Complex and accused Trivedi of uploading “obscene” content on his web site.
According to police sources, Trivedi’s cartoons has depicted Parliament as a commode and showed the national emblem with four wolves instead of lions. In another cartoon, he has Parliament House as a “toilet”. In yet another cartoon, he has reportedly drawn “Mother India” as a woman who is about to be raped. On their part, the cyber wing sleuths of the Mumbai had blocked Trivedi’s website “www. Cartoonsagainstcorruption.com in December last year, soon after Katamayea lodged a complaint against him with the BKC police. Trivedi said: “If telling the truth makes me traitor then I am one. If I am booked under sedition for doing service to the nation, I will continue to do so.”
Meanwhile, the Mumbai unit volunteers of India Against Corruption demonstrated in front of the court where Trivedi was produced.
