Centre not serious on bringing back black money: Advani
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 28 : BJP leader L K Advani today alleged that the Centre was not serious about getting the names of people who stashed black money in tax havens, even though Germany offered to disclose the names of Indians as they received a list of 2,000 people from Swiss banks.
Speaking at a public function as part of his Jan Chetna Yatra which arrived here this evening from Madurai in Tamil Nadu, Mr Advani demanded a white paper on what steps have been by the Centre to bring in black money from foreign countries.
"Out of 2,000 people, 500 are Germans and the rest 1,500 include Indians also,'' he clarified.
Pointing out that Rs 25 lakh crore Indian money has been deposited at various tax heavens by unknown Indians, he said Switzerland, which passed the Restoration of Illicit Money Act, is ready to restore the money to India if the Centre is really sincere on the issue.
Alleging that total black money deposited in foreign banks from India is more than the total deposit from all other countries, Mr Advani said the image of vibrant democracy like India has been damaged world over by the inactive stand on the issue by the Centre.
"My Yatra is aimed at inducing confidence among the common people, as our country is a proud and vibrant democracy which would emerge as an economic superpower in the coming years," he said.
"In the first three-four decades after Independence, Indian was under an impression that it was not an emerging economy. But after 1990s, the country created an image that it would play a major role in the new world order in future. Unfortunately, the happenings in New Delhi in the last two years damaged the country's image as it witnessed many scams, corruptions and scandals," he alleged.
He also alleged that both the UDF and the LDF in Kerala are also involved in various scams.
