Antony speaks up for angry youngsters
Defense minister A.K. Antony Saturday said senior leaders who are criticising the younger generation should first beam torches within themselves. The Union Minister for defense who was provoked by the speech of a senior Congress leader who criticised the youngsters for their hollowness also warned against ignoring the anger of youngsters.

Antony who was here to distribute the T.V. Ananthan Memorial award instituted by the Gandhi Centenary Memorial Society made these comments as reply to a speech by Sarvodaya Mandalam state president Thayat Balan.

"When the society moves forward even one-time revolutionaries will find themselves retarded," Antony said. The new generation is angry at several things he said including the attitude of leaders of political parties, and the direction in which the world, nation and the state is moving, he said.

"It is this anger that we are witnessing in several nations. We saw many things being demolished in the fire of their anger," Antony said.

Antony said the problem does not lie with todays youngsters. "I am 71 years old. And I came in through student political movement. An angry, hot-headed student. The new generation has more anger in them than the older," Antony said.

Stating that old-time leaders are now unable to excite youngsters he said politicians should introspect why they cannot accomplish this. "If the youngsters have no anger, if they turn like us that would be the end of society," he said.

The award was accepted by M.T. Manoj in the absence of Sukumar Azhikode who is in hospital.
