Gas tanker blast: Death toll up to 16
With five more persons succumbing to burn injuries on Saturday, the death toll in the LPG tanker blast that occurred on the night of August 27 at Chala in Kannur rose to 16 even as ten others injured in the accident were still battling for life in various hospitals in Kannur and Kozhikode in Kerala and Mangalore in Karnataka.
The gruesome accident occurred when a tanker truck carrying LPG overturned after hitting the road divider and burst into flames at Chala. Two persons were killed instantly in the blast as several homes and vehicles were totally gutted. As per preliminary estimates, the accident had caused a loss of over Rs 5 crore.
On Saturday, leaders of the Opposition LDF, including Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan and State CPI(M) secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, visited the blast site and the injured in various hospitals while the people in Chala protested against the visit of Congress’s Kannur MLA AP Abdullakutty alleging inaction on his part after the accident.
Speaking to newsmen during the visit, Achuthanandan asked the Government to initiate a murder case against the Indian Oil Corporation. “There should be a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. The IOC should be made to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation each to the families of those killed in the incident,” he said.
