Even though civilization is supposed to have advanced, it does not really seem so with racism still rampant in many parts of the world. The latest such attack is in the British TV reality show Big Brother where Shilpa Shetty has been taunted with racist remarks by her fellow celebrity co-stars. This has sparked worldwide condemnation.
Channel 4 is one of UK's top reality shows where a few chosen celebrities are chosen to live together in a house for a specified period of time and their daily interactions are telecast live on TV. The viewer's then vote for who is most suitable to live in that house. The person getting least votes will be eliminated and so on. Finally, the most voted person who remains at the end will get fabulous rewards.
From Jan 2nd, Shilpa's co-artistes have been Michael Jackson's brother Germaine Jackson, an ex-Miss World Danielle Lloyd, Jade Goody, Joe Miara, Watkins and Carole Malone. When Carole was eliminated, Shilpa consoled her and the rest of the group made fun of Shilpa for that. It was telecast live on TV.
Because of Shilpa's Indian complexion, Goody has been behaving in a very racist manner towards her. She asked Shilpa whether she was polishing herself to look white like them and also taunted her that her presence made her feel dirty. Danielle Lloyd called Shilpa a dog. Joe Miara refused to eat the chicken cooked by Shilpa saying it was not cooked properly. All this was shown on TV.
Attacked on all sides, Shilpa got upset and cried live on TV and this has upset the viewers too. Everyone protested to Ofcom and the matter has even reached the govt level. Speaking about it, British PM Tony Blair said racism in any form would not be tolerated.
On behalf of the Indian govt, enquiries are to be conducted. It is said that this atrocious behavior could be in part because Shilpa was paid more than other participants and she is also poised to win in the next eviction vote.
By insulting Shilpa, her white skinned tormentors have revealed their black hearts to the world.
