The prestigious Kerala State Film Awards 2006 was announced on Friday (Feb 9) by Minister for Cultural Affairs M.A.Baby and jury chairman T.K.Rajiv Kumar in Thiruvananthapuram. Prithviraj bagged the Best Actor award for Vaasthavam while Urvasi was the Best Actress for Madhuchandralekha.
It was quite a surprise as the reigning superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal were totally ignored. In fact Mammootty was tipped to be the best actor for his poignant performances in three films - Karuthapakshikal, Palunku and Kaiyoppu while Mohanlal too was a contender for Keerthichakra. The performance of Murali in Pulijanmam had also won accolades.

However, the surprise packet was when Prithviraj, was chosen over the big two for his performance in Vaasthavam and Urvasi, who made a comeback to films in Madhuchandralekha, is said to have piped Kushboo for her role in Kaioppu.
Lenin Rajendran is the Best Director for Rathrimazha and Drishtantham directed by M.P.Sukumaran Nair has been adjudged as the Best Film. Notebook directed by Roshan Andrews is the second Best Film.
Sai Kumar is the second best male actor award for Ananthabharavi while Padmapriya was the best second best female actor in Karuthapakshikal and Yes Your Honour. The award for best child artist went to Malavika and Mani. Special jury award was given to Sreenivasan for his performance in Thakarachenda.
Best story goes to Jamess Albert for Classmates, Best cameraman is Manoj Pillai for Kaiyoppu, best scenarist Major Ravi for Keerthichakra and Prabha Varma is the best lyricist Out of Syllabus. Ramesh Narayan is the best music director for Rathrimazha.
Best Male singer is Sreenivasan for his Rathrimazha) and Sujatha won the best Female singer for her song in Rathrimazha.
Said Prithviraj : "For a small actor like me, this big award is certainly an inspiration. I am extremely delighted as Vaasthavam was a film which had a lot to experiment?.
